What features are missing from Mac OS X Panther?
oleh ari tj

  • Separated recent applications and documents. Why? (1) Because our behavior in using applications and saving/opening documents is different. (2) Often, if we want to reset recent application list and we don't want our recent documents list also be reseted.
  • Keyboard shortcut for starting/stopping speech in TextEdit. Would it be nice if we could just start/stop the speech by pressing Cmnd+J keystroke without opening any menu just like Classic does?
  • Smooth speech in TextEdit. Songs sound great when played with iTunes, why on earth Victoria speaks garbled in TextEdit? :((
  • SMB network group setting in the network location preference. Imagine as if we are part of several Windows network group, each in different location/network. Would it be nice if we could just change, our group name without have to edit it manually trough Directory Access, wouldn’t it?
  • More control of printing. Imagine we want to print long document, let's say a 150-page document, and we want to save paper use. Therefore, we want to print our document in booklet layout or two pages in each paper. What will we get if we use the standard OS X feature? If we want to print two pages in each paper, then we'll have each paper with two pages with too wide margins. We don't have any option to adjust those margins. And how about booklet printing? Forget it. We have to use third party utility though. And trust me, there are no utilities that good enough for Mac OS X to do this job. Oh, one more thing. I wish we could control the sheet feeder manually too.
  • Speedy printing please. I have a cheap printer. It’s a Canon S100SP. It prints too slow even I print text only document. This would not happen if it’s get connected to a Windows machine.
  • Where is Disc Copy? It is gone. Disk imaging now integrated into Disk Utility with one missing feature: image resizing.
  • A complete restore disk creation utility. Apple seems has done unfinished job with Disk Utility capability to create restore disk. To create a restore disk, you have to use Disk Utility plus ASR command via the Terminal which is far from user friendly and it’s too complicated. Further more, it won’t give you an option to create segmented restore disks.
  • There is no new Desktop Pictures and new Screen Saver. Some theme that reflect specific region would be nice. Imagine if we could have a theme with a picture of Borobudur temple as a deslktop picture. Oh…. It’s going to be “gue banget”.
  • An option to change startup background picture.
  • Since ID3 tag v2.2 through v2.4 in MP3 files has capabilities to store lyric, why iTunes left lyrics viewing and editing untouched? Really, since iTunes 4.0, Apple has added covert art viewing. It’s cool, but it won’t be automatically added as we retrieve information from CDDB. To do so, we have to browse the Internet to look for cover arts matching our songs collection. Or try to utilize some free scripts which are free on the internet. Still we have to drag and drop the picture from our web browser to the iTunes manually. Why doesn’t Apple go a little further to add lyric viewing? Because when we find a covert art matching a song, it’s so often the site we’re retrieving the cover art also gives us that song’s lyric. Plus, iTunes also going to be able to show any lyric with time tags, so a lyric line will automatically blocked simultaneously when the singer sing those lines.
  • More options in iTunes to customize the way iTunes organize our songs collection. It would be nice if only we could arranged our song like this: Artist name folder > Artist name - Song title.mp3.
  • Option to choose visualization in iTunes by visualization's name or by visualization's group name instead of random viewing. What I’m trying to say is, there should be a visualization manager.
  • Mail should have capability to delete filtered email off the server. Imagine somebody keeps sending us junk mail, and we know exactly how to identify this junk mail. It would be nice if we could just delete this junk mail off the server instead being downloaded first and identified as junk mail, moved into Junk mail folder then after a week at last it will be deleted automatically or immediately we manually bounce it.
  • A transparent URL address in Safari's download window and a more robust download manager in Safari. Imagine we're downloading OS X combo update, which has 80 MB in size. We're using dial-up modem Internet connection. Moreover, the download is only 10% left to be completed, and then it's happened. Your Internet connection is down. What will we do then? Usually, we have to track back the URL address trough Apple’s website or Version Tracker or Google. And the worst thing is, if Safari failed to resume the download, we have to start the download back from the beginning. Duh!
  • An option to browse an FTP address instead of automatically mount it in the Finder if we browse an FTP address using Safari. Why would we need Safari to do something like that? Correspond with previous point; imagine we're going to download a huge file in an FTP server. When this FTP server is mounted, then how are you going to find out what is its address?
  • An option to put download window into tabbed window instead of Safari’s separate window. Tab browsing is nice, still we have to pull down the Window menu or press Alt+Cmnd+L keystroke to show the download window. This isn’t consistent with the idea of tab browsing.
  • A package manager. If this utility exists, we'll have opportunities to remove for example additional language you'll never use or any freeware or shareware programs, which you think is bad.
  • A tighter integration between Address Book, iCal, and scheduler. So if we store somebody's birthday, when the time comes, iCal will automatically remind us that somebody is having his/her birthday anniversary.
  • A X11 is an X-Windows environment in OS X to run many popular X11-based UNIX applications. Why don't Panther move further than that? A Windows environment to run many popular Windows-based applications? It's make sense since Microsoft has confirmed us that there will be no Virtual PC for G5 systems.
Want to discuss these issues with me or want to add missing feature, which aren't listed here? Just email me: aritj@bdg.centrin.net.id.
